Crystal Reports Viewer-Excel data refresh problem

I have written a vb.net app that uses the Crystal Reports Viewer 11. The app runs an auto process reads a list of Crystal reports and the destination email addresses from an Access database, saves the reports as .pdf files then emails each pdf to it's associated list of mail addresses, this all works fine. The BIG problem I've encounted is that the reports data are derived from Excel spreadsheets and when I use the "Refresh" command (or use the "Refresh" button on the viewer toolbar) to refresh the report data (part of the spec) the viewer throws up a 'Database' connection dialog box which requires a Database Login ID and Password, as this is an Excel sheet there is NO Login ID or Password so of course the "Refresh" action fails. I've tried different methods of building the reports (in Crystal Reports) but to no avail - Help I'm already overdue on delivering this solution.
