web service concept

hi all,
can any one tell about web service.
It is provided by a website.So we need to develop a distributed frontend application so that user can use it.is this right or wrong?PLz explain abt web service in brief.

A web service is usually an external/third party or your own developed application that you integrate into your own system to be used by your users....
