Downloading a file instead of running it

I have a page where logged in users can see what files they have uploaded and download them if they want. The problem is that if the file is a known extension (like a PowerPoint presentation), clicking the hyperlink runs the file instead of popping up the box asking if you want to open or save the file. How can I change this? Thanks.
