Custom Menu - Is this possible if so how?

Hi there,

I want to create a custom vertical menus that will go along side each other, for a keyboard only application.

I want the buttons to have a background image when not "selected" and a different background image for a "selected" button. (only one button can be selected).

Pressing the down key would select the button underneath it, pressing the left/right key would go to the menu next to it.

I hope you understand my explanation, if so how would i go about implementing this, if not just say and ill try explaining better.
