suggestions for testing methodologies

hello everyone,

my app is in the intial testing stages, and since i have never done any 'proper' testing in the official sense of the word, i thought i would ask the people on this forum for any suggestions for the methodologies i should use... which ones are being used today or the best ways to go about testing an application...
