set a time limit on a function

Hello all, can we set a time limit on a function or a snippet of code. For example a function have to give the output in 5 seconds, if it takes more than 5 seconds to process the control shud exit the function and carry on to the next statement. I am not sure if this can be done ...

Any suggestions please ..
