.PNG vs .ICO

Hi Guys,

I am designing some custom icons in VS2008, I have made several .ico files, but I have seen some .PNG files in our existing application. What are the benefits of each? i.e. which is best to use as an icon on a command button?

Is there a preference? How would I go about making a .PNG file?

You can use more than 16bit colored pictures with png vs icons. IMHO png images handle transparency better than icons files do too.

aaahh ty, looks like you can't create png files in VS? I guess I will make some in Photoshop.

Photoshop should be able to create them, I use Paint.net myself, it's lightweight and free (works with scanners too)
