login page - confirm duplicate login

I am creating a login page with asp.net and vb.net, I have the buttons set up, I am creating my site so that you need to use your email address as the username and you must create a password. Now what i need to do is to create a way to check my sql database and see if the email that is inputted is already in the database, and if it's not to just continue with the site.
