Help reading info from Memory Card

Can someone steer me in the right direction. I heard that there are programs to recover pictures from memory cards that have been corupted. I would like to try and make my own program to do that. I know, I know, Im trying to re-invent the wheel but its a learning experience for me. Seems like it would be fun to do.

Any ideas on where and how I could start this?
