Embedded objects in office documents

I am trying to extract the files embedded in office documents (xls, doc, ppt, etc. as well as rtf files) and have googled around quite a bit and the only thing that I can find for it is to activate the objects and then use a save command for what ever program it activates to. The problem I have with this is it means that you have to write a case for each different object type and then what happens when you don't handle one of the types.

I think i'm missing a piece of this if anyone has a suggestion it'd be very much appreciated along with any sample code.
