Question Data Type Mismatch error

Can not figure out why I get a "data type mismatch in criteria expression" when the criteria is a string and the access data base field is "Text". "Crew" is a field name in Access data base and it's data type is "Text".

Firstly, why are you setting the SelectCommand of a table adapter? No. Just no. If you want to use other than the default query with a table adapter then you add a new query to that table adapter in the DataSet designer. Doing so will add a new method to that table adapter type that you get to name. In your case, you're filtering by the Crew column so the appropriate name would be FillByCrew. Your code would then simply be:

GmBasicTableAdapter.FillByCrew(MaintSkills2016DataSet.gmBasic, "44")

Because the method and its parameters are generated by the wizard, it will tell you exactly what type the argument needs to be.

As for why it doesn't work as it is, if the Crew column is type Text then you have to compare it to a text value, not a numeric value. In SQL code, text values are denoted by the fact that they are wrapped in single quotes. Your SQL will look like this:

select * from gmBasic where Crew = 44;

when it should look like this:

select * from gmBasic where Crew = '44';

If you do it properly and use the DataSet designer though, the value will be inserted using a parameter, which protects you from various issues, most important of which is SQL injection.

By the way, the semicolon is pointless. They are only required when multiple SQL statements are used and Access doesn't support multiple SQL statements via ADO.NET anyway.

Oversight on my part for not catching the Select Command line issue. Data set designer is new to me so I will research that. As you suggested, putting ='44' in select statement works perfectly. How would you wrap a variable to work correctly in a select statement. I have tried numerous combinations.

That does work in principle but you would never do that. You would always use parameters. The DataSet designer would do that by default but if you're writing your own ADO.NET code then you'd do it manually. Ok. opened up a project to learn how a dataset designer can work. The wizard allows me to filter and when I insert an actual value all works. when I use a variable in the filter I have not been able to get it to work. Also I do not have the option of adding the parameter as described above for the filter. Can you help me understand what I am doing wrong there.
