A little trouble hiding/showing (switching between) Forms (Error:... disposed object)

Hey guys!

I've been trying to make an inventory management program for a visual basic class I'm taking. I've been having some difficulties creating a file location procedure which occurs during the application loading process. Its purpose is to check a registry key (if one exists) to see if it points to a valid file and if it doesn't provide a form which offers options to either create a new excel file or to select a file manually and update the registry key. Once the registry key is set the main program is supposed to load.

It appears all of my code is functional, yet when I attempt to Form1.Show and Me.Close the filelocation form (Dialog1) I receive the following error:

Cannot access a disposed object.
Object name: 'Dialog1'.

Previously I attempted to use Dialog1.Hide but to no avail, that form will not disappear from my screen.

I have sought out anything that might relate back to Dialog1 from within Form1, but I couldn't locate anything. If you can help I would greatly appreciate it! I'd really like to understand what's going on here, not just for my class, but for my own knowledge.

Thank you very much!

Dialog1.vb is set to load as the "startup form"
"Shutdown mode" has been set to "When last form closes"

I have to say that the chance of someone reading all that unformatted code even to work out where the error occurs, never mind what causes it, is fairly small. You need to work on isolating what's relevant (e.g. adding columns to a ListView is of no interest to us here) and also post your code snippets in formatting tags to make it easier to read.

Thank you very much for your input. I would have attempted to limit the code, but I COMPLETELY had no idea what was going on. After reading your post and after realizing my complete lack of any idea as to what caused this problem into consideration, I ran a couple tests in order to isolate what's relevant:

1) created extremely simple example solution performing the general process which I envisioned
- test result: functioned perfectly; no error

2) made a copy of solution and deleted everything in both forms of copy except for very basic headers - entered previous extremely simple code into forms
- test result: same error produced

3) created new solution, created new forms, copied objects & code from previous forms, set necessary parameters
-test result: FUNCTIONAL!!!

Conclusion:
The form Dialog1.vb is a template which comes with Visual Studio. I'm not sure exactly what this means, but my current theory is the problem lies within the use of that template.

Again, I appreciate your input! Thanks for helping me solve this!

Have a look at the stack trace for the exception to see exactly where it's being thrown. That will help you narrow it down, at least enough to post just the relevant here and point out where the problem occurs. Then we will be able to help much more easily. Looking at the error message, my guess is that you are creating a form object, calling its Show method, calling its Close method and then calling its Show method again. You can Show a form after calling Close, which disposes it.

If you were using the default instance the second call to Show would actually create a new object. If you're not using the default instance then you would have to create the second instance yourself. To learn a little about default instances, follow the Blog link in my signature and check out my post on the subject. That might shed some light on the issue.
