what's the deal with the reportviewer and subreports?

what is the deal with the reportviewer not being able to display subreports without all kinds of convoluted custom programming? and why oh hasn't microsoft fixed it (or at least let us know that it doesn't work out of the box?)

i've seen hundreds of postings online by folks encountering the "subreport can not be shown" error.

anyone know of a simple solution to getting the reportviewer to display subreports?
