This varies from company to company....Testers have many different names but for the most part after an application is Developed it will be moved to the testing phase in which people will run the software in an environment that mimics its "real life" environment almost exactly and if any bugs come up they report them, get them fixed by a developer, and then repeat the process, and quite often will deploy the application in the working environment and then try out the software there.
