Transparent = not so transparent

This might be a simple question, but I think it's quite a valid one. When I set a control's (ex a checkbox) background colour to "transparent", it doesn't display transparent. This is quite annoying, since I use a lot of gradient and image backgrounds. (I have to, since my target audience almost always suffers from technophobia -- ).

Anyways, a solution to this problem would be much appreciated.

I don't think it's transparent in the sense we think. What it does is adopt the FORMS background color! So yes, I too use gradients and this was a killer!
