test connection of database server

Hello All,
I need to do a wizard for my application that appears to the user when it has its first run on the machine. The wizard should ask the user to specify the ip address of the sql server 2000 database. then the wizard will be responsible of testing the connection, if the connection failed, then the user will be notified about that.

So what are you actually asking? Have you got the GUI part under control? Do you know anything about data access? Please specify what the actual issue(s) is so we don't spend time going over things that you already and know and may already have implemented.
