sorting datagrid by date

HELP!!! i'm trying to sort a datagrid by date. it sorts fine, but it doesn't recognize the field is a date & not a regular number. i thought maybe i needed to put something in the itemdatabound but i really don't know. thx. what i get currently when i sort is:

01/15/05
03/22/04
12/01/03

instead of:
12/01/03
03/22/04
01/15/05

Example: SELECT * FROM Property ORDER BY Listing_Date DESC

i can't do that in my case. the information is coming from a stored procedure which i can't change.
