Setting focus in datagrid

I have what probably is a simple question but I am having trouble with.

I have a datagrid that when displayed I want the first row in the grid selected. When selected it should show fill the related text boxes below the grid. Right now it just displays the grid with the cursor in the first row but nothing is displayed until I actually click the row.
