Recording the screen

HI everyone. My question is: how can I record Everything that's going on on a screen (and save it, for eg, as an mpg, or even separate bitmaps - that doesn't bother me)? I know you have to use a timer for that, but how can I get a "PrintScreen" (for the entire screen or just a specified window)? there is software already doing it, i know, but i do this for the fun.
