sorry the code tags arn't working as they used to :S

but my issue is, i am trying to create a recent work kind of thing, currently i am trying to write things to a txt file and then ready them again, my only issue is i cant work out how i get streamwriter to compair that is has to write with, what already in the file.

also if any1 has any better ways of doing this any advice would be helpful.

Are StreamWriter can't compare anything. All it can do is write to a Stream. If you want to compare then you need to read the file to get the contents into one or more Strings, which you can then compare to other Strings before writing.

i decided to go with usign a database, im using a database for a few other things so just made a new table, all was going well untill it came to deleting rows

what i want to happen is for the application to check what items have the same deletedate as todays date then delete them from the database

You don't need a data adapter or a DataTable because you don't need to retrieve any data. You just create a command containing a DELETE statement and call ExecuteNonQuery. Your SQL code will include a WHERE clause with today's date in it, which you will insert using a parameter. hi again, thanks for the blog post, very helpfull, i have my command built, but now i can't figure out how to send it.

OK thanks for help so far jmcilhinney but i think i have one more problem.

i have got all the diffrent types of insert's/updates/deletes all coded, but now im struggling to get the data from the database to a list :S i only need one coloum to export to the list, as i will just be using search functions using that names.

last time i was using a dataset to add rows to, and then updateing the data adapter to update the DB. so far i have this and cant figure out what way to do this

No, no, no! You have ignored the actual point of that blog post. This:
VB.NET: 
Dim command As New OleDb.OleDbCommand("DELETE * FROM RecentWork WHERE DeleteDate = '" & Format(Date.Today, "dd:MM:yyyy") & "'", connection)
is exactly what I say NOT to do in that blog post. I suggest that you go back and read it again.

That code will retrieve the data from the RecentWork table into a DataTable named "RecentWork" in your DataSet. You already do have the data in a list, i.e. the DataTable. You can bind that DataTable to a grid or some other control(s) if you want or you can loop through it to get the data. That said, if all you're going to do is loop through the data once then you should probably use a data reader instead. This might help to see how and what the difference is:

hey, i read your post again, and i still personally think that this code is easier.
VB.NET:

this gets executed on the form load, so i would prefer it to be as fast as possable, and the only paramater i use, is a date which gets formated, but the user doesn't enter the date, so i dont think their is any security risks their for sql injection.

but still, your the professional if you're telling me that (I Think this would be the route you're advising me to take)

then OFC i will use the better code, but could you please tell me why exactly in this situation it is better, as i dont see any security risk, and dont find it hard to read and follow.

Format is a String function, so you convert your Date value to a String value, when you probably should be working with Date values both in client and database. Something along:
Dim cmd As New OleDb.OleDbCommand("DELETE * FROM RecentWork WHERE DeleteDate = ?")
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("paramDeleteDate", Date.Today)

hi, johnh, thanks for your input, i see where your coming from, but recent work is only a small record for work that has been done, just like the recent list in VS and the likes of, it doesn't link to the data and isn't displayed, plus it get compaired with system date, so for me its easier to format it going into the database and the client as i dont want the time in the value from date.today
