Reading specific text from sequential file?Newbie

Hello this is my first post ever in any forum . First off I know how to read and write to a text file but what I do not know is how to break a line of text into seperate usable items. I have a line of text that make a record containing 3 items. Any Ideas??

How is the line delimited? By width or by a character?
