'read' .doc pages to fill variables?

I have a folder full of .doc pages (standard forms) and wish to read the lines into my vb.net application, much as using readline to collect data from .txt files. Does this work- or should I have the pages saved as .txt?

if you use the Office Interop Assemblies you can easily access word (*.doc) and excel (*.xls) files from your vb applications:
