It's a database server system similar to MS SQL Server, or Oracle. It runs on multiple platforms, Windows, Unix, Linux. It isn't always easy to use or administer. It's used primarily with web hosting and server side scripting (perl, PHP, etc). It can also be used for desktop applications that need a light weight database system.

Are you at all familiar with Access?

Access is a good place to get familiar with databases like MySQL and all those mentioned. It is part of microsoft's office suite (professional only i think?) and all of the queries (data searches) can be translated from a picture representation of what it does to the language MySQL uses (T-SQL).

May I ask why you had a question like "What is MySQL?"?

Are you attempting to start a database question? Did you inherit a project that uses MySQL?

I use .NET and MySql very frequently and can probably address many of your questions in it use. And there are MANY people here who can answer all sorts of Data Access questions using the .NET platform.
