My.Settings.VariableName not keeping variable

This application used to keep three zip codes in My.Settings.VariableName and load them to a listbox when the program started so that the user could keep track of their zip codes. The only change I've made is to increase that capacity from three to ten. Now, when I add zip codes and restart the program, I only show one zip code in the listbox. I really have no idea why it's doing this. Any ideas or suggestions? I might just end up writing the favorite zips to a file because another problem I have is that I've changed the app to check my website for updates, and if you upgrade the program to a newer version I've made, you lose your favorite zip codes. This is still having problems. It's only saving one zip code when I restart the program. I can't seem to find any config files associated with the app to see what it's saving. Why would it only save one zip code? Am I going to need to have it write to a text file somewhere and read it back to populate the combo box? Thanks.

I'm not quite sure exactly what you're saying the issue is. You've got ElseIf blocks so only one of them can ever be executed. Perhaps you should be using a StringCollection instead of ten separate Strings.

I'm really struggling with this one. It's not letting me add favorite locations anymore, and I don't know what changed. I'm using elseif blocks because I only do want one of these to execute. I was thinking that maybe the Form1_Load event was getting messed up because my installation was running from the same location as the publish point, but I'm not sure about that. I really can't see any problems with this. If I try to add a zip code, it's telling me that all ten are used, which isn't true.

I made some changes and reinstalled my program, and I can now add zip codes to my favorites, but they are still not showing up anymore if I close the program and start it again.

I still say you should be using a StringCollection. Then you don't have to do all that Ifing. You can just test the Count property and if it's 10 then it's full, otherwise Add the new value. A StringCollection is much like an ArrayList but accepts only Strings.
VB.NET:

Thanks, I'll give that a try. One question about how to use that string collection. How would I go through the string collection and add each item to a listbox when the form loads? Also, how do I handle it when someone wants to delete a zip code so it takes it off the listbox and takes it out of the string collection? Here's the Form1_Load event:

I'm getting "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" with that code. I realize that's because FavoriteZips equals Nothing, not 0. How do I phrase an if statement there to basically say "If FavoriteZips does not equal Nothing..." then basically run through what I have there? Thanks.

I think I have that part of the question figured out. Now I'm getting that same error when I'm trying to add the first zip code, when FavoriteZips has no value yet. How would I do this line the right way assuming that there's nothing in FavoriteZips yet?

The StringCollection implements the IList interface, which means you can assign it to the DataSource property of a ListBox and the items will be displayed automatically. Remove an item from the collection and it will be removed from the ListBox. That's how data binding works.

Note that there is a bug in the application settings that means a StringCollection object is not created until you add an item. That means that when you create the setting at design time you need to add an item and press OK to create the StringCollection. You can then delete the item you added to leave behind an empty StringCollection object.

Thanks for the information. How would I use that in my application then if I have to add something to the string collection equal to something? I thought about just putting a value in My.Settings, but I don't want to overwrite any of the user's zip codes. Does this mean that I can't do it programmatically without running into that problem? Could I just do something in the sub to add a new zip (the first one) like:

If My.Settings.FavoriteZips(0) = "whatever" Then
My.Settings.FavoriteZips(0) = Textbox1.Text (or whatever the box happens to be...I don't have the app up right now).

Take a look at post #6. If you want to add an new zip code use the Add method. If you want to remove one use Remove or RemoveAt. Check the Count property to make sure you aren't going over your predefined limit. That's about all there is to it.

I still have problems with this. When I debugged it, it looked like it was going to let me add a zip code, but when I published it and ran it, I got an exception, so I'm not sure how to handle adding zip codes. Here's some of the code (with parts missing that don't pertain to this).

I'm getting a different error now. The message is "There is no source code available for the current location."

It's highlighting mycoll.Add("test") in the Form1_Load event. I'm just trying to figure out how to use the StringCollection to deal with My.Settings.FavoriteZips. The code now for Form1_Load is:
