Making a program that supports plugins

I have no idea how to do this and I'm not sure this is the right section to post in but I can't seem to find any reference material on the subject.

I'm essentially making a program that's whole purpose is to run off various plugins that will not only ship with it but that others can write.

So, the first thing I wanted to do in the program is setup the whole frame for the plugins...

Can anyone help or link me to reference material and source code?
