Hello fellow devs:

I've been self-employed for a number of years and I'm happy to have a problem where I cannot keep up with the demand. It is time to grow! I need to hire and I'm interested in hearing from those of you that have made your first hire.

Did you hire as a contractor first, such as keeping them on as a contractor for the first year with the option for full time after?

How do you determine a good starting pay?

How did you find someone worthwhile, i.e. not someone that's been terminated for whatever reason and is on the streets soon to land in your lap?

How do you test for competence? How do you know this person is as good as they say they are?

What lessons learned can you share in your move from self-employed to hiring?

I lease office space so I have that covered, now I need manpower and to do it smartly so they don't break the business.

Thanks for your feedback.
