Both use the .NET framework to translate you source code into bytecode code which the machine can read.
However, as the names suggest, one is based on the original Visual Basic and the other is based on C#/C++. This is so you can program in a language that is familiar to you, but still gives you access to the power and flexibility of the .NET framework.
IMHO it's very valid.. No need for debate if the discussion sticks to the facts and answers the question..
For example:
French and English use largely the same set of characters within their lexicon. It is rare that you find a character K in written French.
VB and C# use largely the same set of characters within their lexicon. It is rare that you find characters { } in C# source.
