Difference between MySQL and Microsoft SQL 2005

Sorry for asking a beginner question, may i know is there any difference between MySQL and Microsoft SQL 2005? Is the way i used to connect to MySQL in VB.NET 2005 also applicable to Microsoft SQL 2005? Thank you.
