connecting to sql server

hi i am new to programming/.net

i am trying to connect to sql server using vb.net .i never did this ,this is the first time we are trying to access the data from sql server.


i just want to know

What do we need in terms od SQL server? (Kind of license, version, functional accounts, etc)
