I have successfully used datagridview to access and display data from a database but when I use an mdf file i get a connection error
can mdf files be used as data source when sql server is not installed

A: No. You must install minimum SQL Server express (or the older MSDE) ...both free editions.

Didnt you ask this question already? No, MDF files cannot be used if SQL server isnt installed.. Access files cannot be used if Jet isnt installed, MP3 files cannot be used if some media player isnt installed, JPG cannot be used if no software that decodes JPEGs is installed, Word documents cannot be opened if Word is not installed and MS Word cannot be used if Windows isnt installed.. As you can see, there's a pattern
