Can a VB 2008 application communicate with a cash register / till ?

Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking about doing a point of sale application and would like to know if there is any way to communicate with a cash register / till ?

If the answer is yes can you tell me what machines support this type of communication and what I need to do in VB code to communicate with the machine?
