Beginner Needing Advice

Hi all
I am Shane in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. I work for the local council as a systems administrator but I do not deal with anything technical just stufff like setting up users and putting info into the system. I would really like to get into the background programming and help develop systems and create reports. I would also at some point like to develop small systems of my own. I have been reading on the Net and VB.Net sounds to be the best route to go down but I know nithing about it and am really struggling trying to find clear guidance on what software I will need to develop systems using VB.Net, where to buy siftware and where the best place is to find guidance on programming. This site seems brill but the info on it is advanced and its like reading spanish to me. Could any of you guys give me some advice on where to start with stuff.

You can start out with the Visual Express editions. For VB, check out:

There are a lot of video tutorials that you can watch and learn. They also have lab excercises that you can do. Explore a bit and see what fits you best.
