app.config - where does it disappear to?

I note with interest that my app.config file becomes a XXX.exe.config during the build, but I am somewhat puzzled when I create an installer and it only seems to contain XXX.exe - where did the config files go?

If I include a project output of "Source Files from XXX" then XXX.exe.config shows in there.. but I'm still puzzled as to why my apps work after install, when the settings they use from the config cannot be on the machine, because the config file never is.. ?

I see there is a user.config file in Application.LocalUserAppDataPath or Application.UserAppDataPath, both somewhere down the 'c:\Documents and Settings' path.
