"__VIEWSTATE" query

Folks,

I've seen the following in the rendered source code og many many pages:

<input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE"
value="dDwtNTI0ODU5MDE1Ozs+ZBCF2ryjMpeVgUrY2eTj79HNl4Q=" />


Thing is though I don't know how they generate the big long hash after the "value" parameter.
Can anyone show me the source code to such an entity is written or do you know of any good articles on this for newbies i.e. I want to be able to generate my own etc...

Any comments/suggestions/code-snippets - much appreciated.
